What do “resiliency & sustainability” mean?

Sustainability and resilience are compatible concepts, but they’re not the same thing. An ideal community, economy or business will be both sustainable and resilient. However, either can exist without the other. Sustainability looks at how current generations can meet their needs without compromising that ability for future generations, resilience considers a system’s ability to prepare for threats, to absorb impacts, and to recover and adapt after disruptive events.

More specifically, as defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development (1987 Brundtland Commission), sustainability means meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. To that end, one might say that resilience is required for sustainability.
