Midland MPO - Essential Responsibilities
Directing Federal Funding
Under federal transportation law, Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) are responsible for determining how and where federal transportation funds are invested within their regions. Through this process, MPOs ensure that projects align with local priorities and regional transportation goals.
MATS, as the designated MPO for the Midland area, receives an annual allocation of over $1 million in federal funds to support local transportation projects. In addition to these dedicated funds, all other federally funded transportation projects in the region must be reviewed and approved through the MPO process, ensuring that federal dollars are spent efficiently and in coordination with regional plans.
